Moving Across Springfield: How to Time Your CWLP Utility Transfer

CWLP utility transfer

The moving truck may need only a few hours to cross Springfield, but your utility responsibilities can stretch across several days. You might receive the new keys on Thursday, move furniture on Saturday and return to clean the old apartment on Monday.

A CWLP utility transfer should account for that full schedule. City Water, Light and Power’s transfer form provides separate fields for ending service at your current address and starting it at the new one. Decide what each property needs before choosing those dates.

Confirm That a Transfer Fits Your Move

CWLP’s transfer process is intended for existing customers moving to another address within its service territory. A first account or a move outside that territory requires a different arrangement.

Give Customer Service the complete destination address, including the apartment or unit number. Establish whether CWLP provides electricity, water or both at that property, and which services you must hold in your own name.

For a rental, compare that answer with the lease. Water may be handled through the landlord while electricity is separately billed. Ask about any shared meter or building billing arrangement before requesting changes.

Keep separately arranged services, such as gas or internet, on their own moving checklist. A CWLP request does not transfer accounts held with other providers.

Plan Around Possession and Handover

Start with the dates when you become responsible for the new home and finish your obligations at the old one. The truck booking helps organize the move, but it does not necessarily establish either utility date.

Consider this example:

Moving milestoneUtility question to resolve
Receive new keys on ThursdayShould service begin that day for cleaning and preparation?
Move furniture on SaturdayWill both homes still need electricity and water?
Finish the old-home walkthrough on MondayWhen should your responsibility at that address end?

This is a planning example, not a promised CWLP schedule. Discuss your proposed start and stop dates with Customer Service, including whether overlapping service can be arranged and how it will be billed.

Coordinate the old address with your landlord or buyer. Confirm when they will assume responsibility, rather than leaving your account open until someone eventually asks you to close it.

Allow Processing Time Before a Weekend Move

CWLP’s published transfer instructions state that applications are processed within two business days of receipt. They also explain that additional information or arrangements may be needed.

Treat that as an application-processing timeframe. It does not establish an exact activation time or guarantee that a Friday request will support a Saturday move.

Contact CWLP once you have the new address and a workable schedule. Ask how far ahead it can accept your request, whether your preferred dates are available and what must be completed before those dates can be confirmed.

You can begin through CWLP’s account services page, which directs customers to myCWLP and other transfer options. Customer Service is available at 217-789-2030, with regular telephone hours of 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding major holidays.

For a holiday weekend, resolve outstanding questions before the office closes.

Prepare the Information That Can Hold Up a Request

Have a recent CWLP bill available when you apply. The transfer form requests your name, daytime phone number, account number, both service addresses and the requested start and termination dates.

Check street directions and unit numbers carefully. An account for the wrong apartment can be difficult to untangle while movers are waiting downstairs.

Keep your lease or ownership documents accessible and ask whether CWLP needs updated identification or household information for your transfer. Its residential application policies include identity and occupancy documentation, but Customer Service can explain what is needed for your existing account.

Use a phone number you will answer during moving preparations. If a representative needs clarification, an overlooked callback can leave the request unresolved despite your early submission.

Resolve Balances and Deposit Questions Early

Ask whether anything on your current account must be addressed before service begins at the new property. CWLP’s residential policies require applicants with unpaid past-due utility charges to settle those amounts and pay a service deposit before service is initiated.

An ordinary bill that has not reached its due date is different from a past-due balance. Have Customer Service identify the amount, deadline and payment requirement that apply to you.

Also ask how any deposit already held will be handled. Do not include an assumed refund in your moving budget or presume that a deposit automatically covers another payment.

If you use a payment arrangement or the Level Payment Plan, discuss how moving affects it. Record any revised amount or enrollment step alongside the transfer confirmation.

Check Whether the New Home Needs a Service Visit

A home with lights on during a viewing may still have service in the departing occupant’s name. Conversely, a vacant property may need more than an account update before you can use its utilities.

Tell CWLP what you know about the property’s status. Ask whether service is active, whether a field visit is required and whether someone must be present.

For apartments, establish who can provide access to locked meter rooms or utility areas. Give the property manager enough notice to arrange entry if CWLP requires it.

For a new home or a property undergoing renovation, ask the builder whether any installation, inspection or service-release issue remains outstanding. Keep that question separate from the account application so an accepted request is not mistaken for confirmation that unfinished work is complete.

Revise Both Dates When the Schedule Changes

A delayed closing can affect the old address as well as the new one. You may need to keep the current home operating longer while postponing the start of responsibility elsewhere.

Contact CWLP promptly with the existing request details. State which dates should change and ask whether an already scheduled service order can still be revised.

Afterward, obtain confirmation of both addresses and both effective dates. Changing the new-home start date should not leave an unsuitable old-home stop date unnoticed.

Share the revised arrangement with the landlord, buyer or property manager involved. Keep one current version of the schedule, replacing earlier notes so household members do not rely on different instructions.

Check Service Before Deliveries Depend on It

Once you have lawful access and service is supposed to be active, check ordinary lights, taps and the equipment you need for the move. Test the garage opener before relying on it as the delivery entrance, and allow the refrigerator time to cool before bringing perishable food.

Report missing service promptly and explain whether electricity, water or both are affected. Have the address and transfer confirmation available.

Keep meter access clear while unloading. Boxes stacked in a utility area can interfere with a visit that was otherwise ready to proceed.

At the old property, finish cleaning and any agreed walkthrough before the confirmed end of your responsibility. Returning keys should not substitute for notifying CWLP that your service must end.

Reconcile the Final and First Bills

Keep the final bill for the old address separate from the first bill for the new one. Compare their service periods with the confirmed transfer dates and ask about any unexpected overlap.

CWLP’s policies tie normal billing timing to the service address, so check the new due date rather than relying on your previous monthly routine. Unpaid final charges can also be transferred to another active account.

Review saved payment details. Ask whether AutoDebit continues as arranged, and check any account reference stored in your bank’s bill-payment system. Confirm how the final old-address bill will be paid before removing its payment instructions.

Retain the transfer confirmation until both accounts have been reconciled. It gives you a clear record if a date or charge needs correction.

Note: Processing times do not guarantee a particular activation time. Confirm service dates, access requirements, deposits and billing arrangements directly with CWLP for both properties.
