The Illinois Guide is an independent website that helps people handle the practical side of everyday life in Illinois. We focus on the small, specific details that are easy to miss until they cost you a ticket, a fee or a wasted afternoon.
Why we started
Local information is usually spread across city websites, utility portals, transit pages and PDF notices. Each source answers part of the question, and few of them answer it in the order you actually need. A new resident trying to park legally, set up electricity or get rid of an old mattress can easily spend an evening piecing it all together.
We started The Illinois Guide to do that work once, clearly, so the next person does not have to.
What we cover
Our guides are organized around the moments when local rules matter most:
- Moving Guides: city stickers, zone parking, utility transfers and the checks to make before move-in day.
- Housing Guides: rental inspections, driveway permits, water service lines and the questions to ask before you rent or buy.
- Living in Illinois: bulk pickup, recycling, composting and the city services you rely on every week.
- Getting Around: commuter lots, overnight parking rules, train stations and campus visits.
- Lifestyle: trails, libraries, museum passes and local outings, with the logistics sorted out ahead of time.
How we write our guides
Every guide starts with one real situation and the question behind it, such as where a guest can leave a car overnight or what an “unknown” pipe material on a water service map means. From there, we:
- Focus on a specific city or place instead of offering vague statewide generalities.
- Point you to the official city, county, agency or provider resources that make the final call.
- Lay out the steps in order: what to check first, what to confirm next and what tends to trip people up.
- Write in plain language, without jargon or filler.
Know before you go
Local rules change. Fees are updated, pickup schedules shift and permit requirements are revised. We review and update our guides, and every article shows its publication date, but the official source is always the final word. Use our guides as a well-organized starting point, then confirm the details that matter with the city, agency or provider before you act.
What we are not
The Illinois Guide is an independent publication. We are not a government agency, and we are not affiliated with, endorsed by or acting on behalf of any city, county, state agency, utility, transit system, university, library or other organization mentioned on this site. Our content is general information, not legal, financial, real estate or other professional advice.
Who we write for
New residents, longtime locals, renters, homeowners, students, commuters and weekend visitors. If you have ever stood in front of a parking sign wondering what it really means, these guides are for you.
