Recycling an Old TV in Elgin: When to Schedule Pickup and When to Use a Drop-Off Site

Elgin TV recycling

The replacement television arrives on Friday, but the old set is still upstairs and moving day is approaching. Leaving it beside the garbage cart may seem convenient, yet that does not arrange an electronics collection.

Elgin TV recycling works best when you choose the disposal route before moving the screen. A scheduled home collection can save a difficult car journey, while a drop-off site may suit a tighter deadline. Your household’s service, the TV’s size and the help available for moving it all affect that decision.

Keep the TV Out of Regular Garbage

Illinois prohibits putting televisions and certain other electronics in the trash. The Illinois EPA’s electronics recycling guidance lists TVs among the devices covered by the state’s electronics program.

A broken screen does not turn a television into ordinary bulky waste. Nor should a small set go into the household recycling cart.

Check whether the TV could still be used before committing to recycling. A working flat screen may have a potential recipient, but confirm acceptance and collection arrangements first. Describe its age, condition and missing accessories accurately.

For a nonworking set, move directly to arranging an appropriate electronics service. Keep it somewhere secure while you settle the booking or destination.

Check Whether Your Household Qualifies for Home Collection

Elgin’s household hazardous waste and electronics collection service is offered as part of regular household waste and recycling service. The city specifies that it applies to residents using curbside garbage and recycling carts, not multifamily buildings served by dumpsters.

Apartment and condominium residents should therefore check their building’s arrangement rather than relying on an Elgin address alone. Ask management whether electronics collection is available through its waste contract or whether residents must organize disposal individually.

For eligible households, contact the city’s contracted provider, LRS, at 855-612-7938 to schedule collection. Participation in the household waste program does not automatically create a pickup appointment.

Give the service address and explain that you have a television. Ask whether the proposed collection is included in your service and whether your item’s size or condition requires different handling.

Request a Date Before Taking the Set Outside

Schedule pickup when you can wait for an available appointment and safely bring the television to the agreed collection point.

Provide the actual deadline if you are moving, handing over a rental or clearing space for other work. Ask for the earliest confirmed collection date, rather than assuming electronics follow your ordinary garbage day.

Clarify where to place the TV, when it should be set out and whether anyone needs to be present. Ask what happens if the collection is missed or rescheduled.

Keep the confirmation and preparation instructions. A request submitted online is not necessarily the same as a confirmed date.

Home collection also does not automatically mean removal from a living room or basement. Establish the service boundary and arrange the help needed to move the set from its current location.

Confirm the Number of Screens in Your Booking

Count everything you want removed before contacting the collector. A television, a computer monitor and several smaller devices may be subject to different limits.

The LRS resident portal and Elgin’s Household Waste page list a maximum of seven electronics per pickup, including up to two TVs and/or monitors combined. However, another city collection page states one television per call. Because the published guidance differs, confirm the limit for your booking before setting out multiple screens.

Describe the exact list rather than asking whether “a few electronics” are acceptable. For example: one television, one monitor, a printer and a DVD player.

Ask whether adding another device later requires updating the request. Keep items you intend to retain well away from the collection group.

Use a Drop-Off Site When the Timing Works Better

Drop-off can be practical when a pickup appointment falls after your deadline and you have suitable transport and lifting help.

Kane County’s West Dundee recycling center is at 900 Angle Tarn, behind the village’s Public Works building, with access from Beacon Street. Published hours are Monday through Friday, 7 a.m.–3 p.m. No appointment is normally required, and attendants assist with unloading. Check holiday closures and current notices before leaving.

Use the county’s recycling center information to verify directions and operating details. Arrive with enough time to complete unloading before closing.

There is also a county center on Fabyan Parkway, but its availability needs particular attention. As of November 5, 2026, the county lists the 517 E. Fabyan Parkway site as temporarily closed for repaving, with reopening anticipated in mid-November. Consult the closure updates rather than relying on its usual hours.

Budget for the TV Fee Before Loading It

Electronics recycling does not always mean free television recycling. Kane County’s published screen fees are based on the diagonal screen measurement:

Screen sizePublished fee per TV
Under 21 inches$25
21 inches or larger$35

The county’s TV and monitor fee information states that its collection partner accepts cash and credit or debit cards. At the county’s West Dundee and Fabyan centers, there is no maximum television size, although safe transportation remains your responsibility.

Measure the screen diagonally rather than measuring the cabinet’s width. Record the model number too, especially when asking about a large console or projection television.

Do not apply these prices automatically to another recycler. Different locations may use different size thresholds, surcharges or payment arrangements. Confirm the full charge for the specific destination you choose.

Verify Any In-City Alternative by Name and Address

A shorter drive may be available through a private facility, but its services are separate from municipal collection.

Elgin’s drop-off directory lists Elgin Recycling at 660 Schiller Street as accepting televisions for a fee. The similarly named business is not the City of Elgin’s municipal recycling department. Confirm current acceptance, hours and charges before visiting.

Ask specifically about the type of television you have. A facility advertising electronics recycling may accept computers while excluding televisions, or may have separate rules for older CRT sets and large projection models.

Also explain any damage. A cracked display, loose glass or a partially dismantled cabinet should be disclosed before transportation.

Do not leave a television outside a closed facility. Arrange another visit or a different approved destination if your planned drop-off cannot proceed.

Plan the Carrying Route as Carefully as the Car Journey

Check the path from the TV’s current location to the collection point or vehicle. Stairs, narrow turns and heavy older sets can make this the hardest part of disposal.

Measure the television’s full cabinet dimensions and the vehicle opening. A screen-size measurement used for pricing does not tell you whether the set will fit through the hatch.

Arrange enough capable help and follow the manufacturer’s handling guidance. Protect the screen and secure the load without placing pressure on the display. Avoid opening the casing or dismantling an older CRT television to reduce its weight.

For a damaged set, obtain the recycler’s packaging instructions before moving it. Keep loose accessories contained, and separate any items the facility has not agreed to accept.

Remove Personal Access and Keep the Handoff Clear

For a smart TV that still works, review the manufacturer’s instructions for signing out, removing accounts and performing a factory reset before disconnecting it. Check for attached streaming devices, USB drives or memory cards you intend to keep.

A set that no longer powers on may require a different approach. Review the account controls available through your streaming services and ask the recycler how it handles devices that may retain personal information.

Keep any receipt, pickup confirmation or payment record until disposal is complete. If you switch from a scheduled pickup to drop-off, cancel the original appointment so the crew is not sent unnecessarily.

Note: This article concerns Elgin, Illinois. Pickup eligibility, item limits, fees and site availability can change. Confirm the arrangements directly before moving the TV, particularly while temporary closures or conflicting collection limits remain published.
