Visiting Southern Illinois University: Where to Park for a Campus Tour, Event, or Weekend Stay

SIU visitor parking

A campus tour, a football game and a weekend visit to a student can bring you to the same university with very different parking arrangements. The space closest to your destination may require payment, a particular permit or an event reservation.

This guide covers Southern Illinois University Carbondale. When planning SIU visitor parking, start with the purpose and dates of your visit, then match those details to the appropriate lot. Visitors heading to SIU Edwardsville should use that campus’s separate parking instructions.

Use Your Tour Confirmation to Choose the First Stop

SIU’s current admissions directions say campus visits begin at the Tedrick Welcome Center, 1264 Lincoln Drive. Visitor spaces are reserved west of the building. When those spaces are full, the directions identify Lot 13A, in front of the Student Center, and Lot 12, in front of the Student Services Building, as alternatives for these campus visitors.

Check your appointment confirmation before setting the navigation. A meeting with an individual department may begin somewhere different from a standard admissions tour.

Use the Getting to Campus page alongside the instructions supplied for your booking. Ask whether you need to collect or display a permit and how staff want you to handle overflow parking.

Allow time between entering campus and checking in. Your appointment time should not be the moment you expect to reach the parking lot, particularly when several family members need to unload or walk together.

Follow the Open House Parking and Shuttle Plan

Open House has its own arrival arrangements. SIU’s Plan a Visit page currently directs Open House attendees to Banterra Lot 56, with buses transporting guests to and from the Student Center.

Follow the instructions for your particular event rather than assuming the daily-tour spaces will be appropriate. An organized arrival plan can place visitors farther from check-in while providing transportation for that distance.

Review the day’s schedule before leaving the car. Bring what you need for the welcome session, campus activities and expected weather so you do not have to return immediately.

Ask about shuttle operating times if you plan to arrive late or stay beyond the scheduled program. For admissions visit questions, SIU lists 618-453-7141.

Use Paid Visitor Spaces for an Independent Visit

A library visit, an informal walk around campus or an appointment without arranged parking calls for a different approach. Locate signed visitor spaces using the university’s parking map, then read the instructions at the space.

The university’s 2026–2027 parking map states that pay-station parking requires payment 24 hours a day, seven days a week. An evening arrival or a quiet Sunday does not automatically make those spaces free.

SIU introduced ParkMobile in March 2026 to replace its previous Flowbird app and pay-by-text system. Consult the university’s payment guidance and the current signs when starting a session.

Check the selected location, vehicle details, price and expiration time before confirming. Build enough time into the session for the walk back, and establish whether an extension is available if your appointment runs long.

Ask the Organizer About Event Parking

A conference invitation or event ticket should prompt a parking question: has the organizer arranged a permit, designated a lot or included parking in registration?

SIU says departments can arrange guest permits and that conference parking is normally handled through the registration process. Ask where you will receive any permit and which areas it authorizes before entering a restricted lot.

Athletics uses separate arrangements. The official game-day parking page distinguishes maroon lots associated with season-ticket purchases and scholarship-fund donations from yellow lots open to the public for free tailgating.

Use the map and instructions for your sport and event date. A football arrangement should not be carried over automatically to basketball, commencement or a concert.

Also ask when vehicles must leave. Permission to park during an event does not establish that the same space is available overnight.

Choose a Designated Lot for a Weekend Stay

SIU’s visitor parking guidance lists Lots 3, 56 and 59 for visitors parking without a pass on Saturday and Sunday, including overnight parking. This is a specific allowance for named lots.

Find the selected lot on the campus map before arriving, and check signs or temporary restrictions at its entrance. A nearby lot with available spaces may have a different designation.

Describe your entire stay when checking eligibility. A Friday-evening arrival followed by a Monday-morning departure extends beyond the days expressly named in the weekend guidance. Confirm the applicable start and end times with Parking Division and arrange any additional authorization needed.

Consider the route between the lot and your accommodation, too. Choose an authorized location that works for your luggage, walking distance and expected return time.

Arrange a Guest Permit for Other Overnight Visits

For the hosted-guest process described by SIU, the host and visitor must attend together: the host presents an SIU ID, and the guest presents a valid driver’s license. Parents and legal guardians receive a free guest permit under this arrangement; other guests pay $5 per day.

Coordinate this step with your host before traveling. A late arrival is harder to manage when the student you are visiting is unavailable to accompany you.

University Housing directs visitors to Parking Division during business hours or the Department of Public Safety after hours. Both are in Trueblood Hall on East Campus.

Parking Division lists 1175 South Washington Street, office hours of 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 618-453-5369 for parking questions.

Confirm which lot the permit covers, where to display it and when it expires. Parking permission also remains separate from any residence-hall guest registration your host must complete.

Plan Accessible Parking and Brief Drop-Offs Separately

Admissions states that accessible parking is available in campus lots for visitors with a valid state-issued placard. Contact your destination about the most useful space and accessible entrance, particularly when the closest building entrance involves steps or a longer route.

Ask whether any university permit or payment requirement applies to the particular space you intend to use. Do not assume that every nearby pay space has the same conditions as a designated accessible bay.

SIU also provides 15-minute loading and unloading zones for visitors and guests. These can help with a brief drop-off, but they do not cover an entire tour, meal or meeting.

Decide who will move the vehicle after unloading and where it will go. Keep access aisles, building entrances and other reserved areas clear throughout the process.

Check Evening Rules Before Staying Longer

Advice that parking becomes more flexible after 4 p.m. needs context. SIU’s on-campus guidance attaches that flexibility to vehicles with a valid parking decal and retains exceptions for visitor-only, continuously reserved and accessible spaces. It is not a general invitation for every visitor to use any empty lot.

A student or employee also remains affiliated with SIU; accompanying family does not turn that person into a visitor for parking purposes.

Before leaving the car, check the orientation of the space. The current university parking rules prohibit backing in or pulling through, so park head-in.

Save your payment confirmation or permit details and note the lot number. When a visit continues later than expected, those records make it easier to explain your current arrangement and ask whether the vehicle needs to move.

Note: This guide concerns SIU Carbondale. Parking fees, lot access, event arrangements and permit requirements can change. Confirm the instructions for your visit date and follow posted restrictions.
