Taking Amtrak From Uptown Normal: Essential Overnight Parking Checks

Uptown Normal Amtrak parking

An Amtrak ticket from Bloomington-Normal does not settle where your car can stay while you are away. Uptown Normal offers a free parking arrangement for train passengers, but it applies to a particular part of one garage and requires registration. A paid alternative has its own payment requirements.

Before departure, match your Uptown Normal Amtrak parking arrangement to your return date, vehicle and arrival time. The most useful preparation is knowing which entrance to use, how your stay will be recorded and whom to contact if the journey home changes.

Choose Your Garage Before Setting the Navigation

The station’s passenger address is 11 Uptown Circle, but the two principal overnight parking options have different addresses:

Parking optionGarage addressOvernight arrangement
College Avenue Garage101 W. Mulberry StreetFree Amtrak parking on the fifth-floor rooftop, with registration
Uptown Station Garage122 W. Beaufort StreetPaid overnight parking through the applicable permit or parking session

The Town’s parking garage directory identifies these locations and their parking arrangements. Save the garage address separately from your train reservation so your navigation takes you to the intended vehicle entrance.

Amtrak’s Bloomington-Normal station information states that parking availability is not guaranteed. Have a second option in mind, particularly when arriving close to departure, and allow time to change garages without rushing.

Register for the Free Rooftop Arrangement

Free long-term parking for Amtrak passengers is limited to the flat rooftop portion of the fifth floor of the College Avenue Garage. The ramp leading up to that surface is excluded.

Before boarding, check in at the Heartland Parking Information Desk inside Uptown Station, beside the Amtrak desk. The Town asks passengers to provide:

  • A telephone number.
  • The vehicle’s licence plate number and issuing state.
  • Departure and return dates.
  • Proof of the train trip, such as a ticket.

These instructions appear on the Town’s Amtrak and bus parking page.

Take a photograph of your plate before walking away from the car, especially when using a borrowed or rental vehicle. Keep the travel confirmation accessible on your phone or bring a printed copy.

Parking on a lower floor does not qualify under the free rooftop arrangement. Ask about the appropriate paid session or permit before leaving a vehicle elsewhere in the garage.

Match Your Arrival to the Parking Desk’s Hours

The published parking desk hours are 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Parking questions can be directed to Heartland Parking at 309-433-3445.

Uptown Station’s first-floor operating hours begin earlier, at 6:30 a.m., and end at 9:30 p.m. That difference matters: access to the station does not establish that parking staff will already be available.

For an early departure, ask beforehand how registration or payment should be arranged. Find out whether anything can be completed in advance and what alternative applies if your arrival falls outside desk hours.

Build parking and registration into your arrival plan alongside the walk to the station. Amtrak recommends arriving at least 45 minutes early when ticketing or passenger assistance is needed. Allow additional time for any parking tasks that must happen first.

Price the Paid Stay Using Your Actual Dates

The Town lists Uptown Station Garage parking for Amtrak passengers at $8 per night. Its parking guidance also provides for a multi-day permit purchased through the parking desk.

Give staff your planned arrival and collection times when asking for the total. A Saturday-morning departure and Monday-evening return involve more than simply counting the nights spent away. Clarify how the applicable rate covers the full period and whether additional charges apply.

Compare the desk-issued arrangement with paying through Passport. The Town says the system is primarily cashless, but cash payment is available at the station’s parking desk. It also identifies processing fees associated with app use.

Keep the receipt or confirmation where you can retrieve it during the trip. Check the vehicle details, location and end date before leaving the counter.

Verify the App’s Expiration Date Before Boarding

The Town’s published pages give different instructions about multi-day app sessions. Its main parking page says users can select up to five days in one session. The Amtrak-specific page says sessions require extension every 24 hours.

Resolve that difference against the actual booking screen or with parking staff. Read the displayed expiration date and time before confirming payment. Ask whether the selected session covers your entire absence or requires action while you are away.

Uptown Station Garage uses Passport zone 9152. Match that number to the signs where you park and check that the correct vehicle is selected.

For a stay longer than five days, the Town’s parking FAQs direct travelers to the desk for a multi-day permit. Ask how its dates will be recorded and whether anything must be displayed in the vehicle.

Check Vehicle Clearance and the Walk With Luggage

The garage directory lists a 7-foot clearance at College Avenue, with an exception for the ground floor, and 7 feet 11 inches at Uptown Station. A ground-floor exception does not establish that a tall vehicle can reach the free rooftop spaces.

Measure the vehicle’s full height when carrying a rooftop box, bicycle rack or other equipment. Contact parking staff before arrival if clearance is uncertain; discovering a problem at the entrance leaves fewer options.

Also consider the route between the parked car and the train. Ask about elevator access, any current closures and arrangements relevant to limited mobility. Work out how your party will manage suitcases, children or mobility equipment along that route.

For rooftop parking, check the weather forecast. Keep any winter equipment you may need on return accessible in the vehicle.

Keep Passenger Drop-Off Separate From Long-Term Parking

A companion dropping you at the station needs a different plan from someone leaving a car for several nights. The Town prohibits passenger pickup and drop-off in Uptown Circle and directs drivers to the Uptown Station Garage instead.

The garage offers a free first hour, but drivers should start the required parking session to claim it. Free short-term parking does not establish permission for an unpaid overnight stay.

Agree on the collection location before traveling. A delayed train can change how long someone waits, so send updated arrival information before they start their parking session.

Plan for a Later Return Before It Happens

Ask how to update the parking arrangement if your train is delayed or you extend the trip. For registered free parking, clarify whom to notify about a changed return date. For paid parking, establish whether an extension can be made remotely and what to do if the app will not accept it.

A revised Amtrak reservation should not be treated as an automatic parking update. Keep the parking contact number, payment record and a photograph of your space together so you can explain the situation without searching through unrelated messages.

Before leaving the car, remove visible valuables and note the level and nearest pedestrian exit. Those details are particularly useful after a late arrival, when finding the vehicle should be the final straightforward part of the journey.

Note: Parking rates, registration procedures, desk hours and availability can change. Confirm the arrangement for your complete stay with the Town of Normal or its parking operator before departure.
